SLOAN CELEBRATES 20TH ANNIVERSARY WITH THE RELEASE OF
THEIR 10TH STUDIO ALBUM –THE DOUBLE CROSS
Toronto, ON - It’s hard to believe that Sloan have been cranking out power pop hallmarks for two decades but they have and will commemorate this with the release of their tenth studio album, The Double Cross on May 10th 2011 on the Outside Music Label.
Over the past twenty years, Sloan has become a household name in Canada. Beginning in 1991 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Chris Murphy (bass/vocals), Jay Ferguson (guitar/vocals), Patrick Pentland (guitar/vocals), and Andrew Scott (drums/vocals) left their respective bands to join forces and as they say, the rest is Canadian rock history.
Sloan recorded The Double Cross in their Toronto studio from August to November of 2010. With the democratic writing process still intact, each member contributed songs to the 12-track album that takes us on a musical ride through pop’s songbook. From anthemic rockers followed by orchestral odes to another Fab Four, bookended by heart-on-their sleeves ballads and injected with classic rock boogie; the album’s songs are designed to flow continuously, inviting the listener to experience and appreciate the music as a complete work.
"The records don't seem any easier or harder to make.” said Patrick Pentland “My songs on this record were an attempt to explore sounds from my teen years that got me excited about making music. Whether that comes across or not is another thing. In the end, you can't escape that Sloan sound."
Jay Ferguson adds “I think every band always says of their latest LP "it's our best yet!" or perhaps "it's our greatest work since Exile On Main St.", and then you hear it and you say to yourself, 'hmm, well, not quite, guys'. Hopefully I'm not joining those ranks, but for this our 10th album, I personally feel it's up there with my favourites of ours such as One Chord To Another and Never Hear The End Of It.. Short and sweet with unexpected turns down different paths. Not bad for a 10th LP.”
The Double Cross, a titular shout-out to the band’s 20th (or XX) anniversary, is the bands tenth album and first with the Outside Music Label. The album will be released simultaneously in the US via Yep Roc.
The Double Cross kicks off with album-opener “Follow the Leader” and the sure-fire road-trip riffage of “Unkind.” In addition to releasing one of their best albums to date, the band will be celebrating all year long with special shows, an exclusive one-of-a-kind album artwork series and embark on an extensive tour of Canada throughout the spring, summer and well into the fall.
So raise your glasses to Jay, Patrick, Chris, Andrew and 20 years of Sloan. Here’s to 20 more!
